Teeworlds Map Editor

Today we are going to explore video game creation using a map editor for the game Teeworlds.

Teeworlds is a free multiplayer online game I have put on our schools shared X drive for all to play.

The goal today is to learn how to use the map editor to understand how video games are created.

Step 1. Launch the game Teeworlds so that you know what the game is like, lets all join in on the map that Mr. Hurst created.
Launch the game here: My Computer > Lane on 'ppsfils.ad.ppsnet....' > Media > Games > Teeworlds
He will give you a server IP address to connect to.
10.181.9.208

Step 2. Once we have an understanding of how the gameplay and maps relate lets create our own.

Disconnect and in the game menu press the key combination CTRL + SHIFT + E.

This loads the editor which looks like this.

Mr. Hurst will show you the basics of how to use this editor on the projector. The main thing to know is the game layer, and the skin layers. *skin in the sense means the visuals you see in the game.

You can either file > load an existing map and make significant changes (RECOMMENDED), or if you feel daring build your own level from scratch (HARD).

Step 3. Once you have finished with your level you need to save it as and call it your name. THEN locate the map file and upload it to me.  - Mr Hurst can put your map on the server and we can all play it, if you want.

Locate the file and copy it to your Y drive or Desktop (place easy to get to).
The original file will be here:

My computer > Local Disk (C) > Documents and Settings >  YOUR LOGIN > Application Data > Tee Worlds > Maps
*Application data is a hidden folder, once you get to the folder of your login, in the address bar type the folder \application data

Spring Break Countdown

TODAY we are going to make a countdown webpage.

Step one: download or copy the project files.

http://www.pps.k12.or.us/schools-c/pages/lane/pages/springbreak.zip

OR

My Computer > X drive > Media > 2011-2012 > Afterschool > Spring Break

Copy and unzip to your Y drive.

Step two: Change the countdown date and time.

Right click on springbreakstarts.htm and choose Open With > Notepad.

Change these to the correct date and time for when spring break starts.
*note, right now they are set to New Years 2013.

var year=2013    //-->Enter the count down target date YEAR

var month=01      //-->Enter the count down target date MONTH

var day=01      //-->Enter the count down target date DAY

var hour=01      //-->Enter the count down target date HOUR (24 hour clock)

var minute=01    //-->Enter the count down target date MINUTE

EXAMPLE:

var year=2012    //-->Enter the count down target date YEAR

var month=03      //-->Enter the count down target date MONTH

var day=26      //-->Enter the count down target date DAY

var hour=9      //-->Enter the count down target date HOUR (24 hour clock)

var minute=15    //-->Enter the count down target date MINUTE

Step THREE.

find these lines.

<h2>I think Spring Break starts on Friday when the last bell rings.<br>
I think Spring Break starts on Monday when we would normally have to be at school.</h2>

Omit, that means delete or backspace, the line that you don't want, leaving the line you agree with.

Step FOUR
Find a picture that represents, or shows what you think spring break should look like (school appropriate).

Save it in place of the other picture, if you want you can edit, but you do not have to.

WHEN YOU ARE DONE.

Rename your springbreak folder your name, example:   hurstspringbreak.

Right click on the folder > send to > compressed (zipped) folder.
Upload zipped file.

Checkers, game redesign

Much like the other day with the tic tac toe, today we are going to do the game of checkers, it has a few more pieces, and potential for more work, but the same basic concept of game creating.

Step 1.
Copy the checkers folder into your Y drive.
Go to My Computer > X > Media > Games         -           Right click on the checkers folder and copy, then                        go to your Y drive and paste.

Step 2.
Find images, try to find something that would oppose another thing, or relate to another thing.

One for you
One for your opponent

Step 3.
Launch the program / application GIMP (Start > Programs> GIMP)
Edit the images to fit the correct sizes, ALL images are 50px by 50px.

Edit the user and opponent to have a normal state and a highlighted or clicked state. Play game to see what happens when you click on an image.

 ALSO

Add the images for when the checker piece is "kinged"
With the ON state also.

Total images should be:
opponent1.png
opponent1on.png
opponent2.png
opponent2on.png

user1.png
user1on.png

user2.png
user2on.png

The easiest way to do this is simply open the file, put your image in place of it and re-save the file.

GIMP tools to use, Move, scale, rotate...

IF YOU WANT TO you can change the blank1.png and blank.png so that you have your own custom checkerboard. ALSO if you want to you can edit the lang-en-us.js file to have your own custom directions.

WHEN YOU ARE DONE.

Rename your checkers folder your name, example:   hurstcheckers.

Right click on the folder > send to > compressed (zipped) folder.
Upload zipped file.
