Computer Programming

Today we are going to learn a little about programming, not everyone is a natural computer programmer and I don't expect you all to pick up on this easily, but this is designed to show you what it's like, what computer programming is about and if you are good you can make a lot of money as a computer programmer.

Basically computer programming is learning a new language and then typing in that language to create things like computer programs, mobile apps and websites.

Heat and Electronics

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/suncs
Then, read and learn about Heat and Electronics and do the quiz at the bottom.

A computer and it's processor takes electricity and moves it quickly through transistors and circuits in order to do things the faster it works the warmer it will get.

This heat needs to be cooled down otherwise it will slow down the computers ability to move the electricity and thus slow down your computer experience.

Computers use Heat Sinks which are usually made of aluminum to move the heat away from the processor and then fans to blow the hot air away.

Typical desktop computers should be around 100-125 degrees at their processor.

The max heat a desktop should ever be is 180 to 190 degrees, this heat is located at the processor and will overheat if any higher.

Once a computer overheats it will shut down automatically in order to save it from harming any of it's parts.

Dust is bad for computers and other electronics because it slows down the cooling fans that are trying to move the hot air out. Also it makes it so air can not flow away from the hot areas as well causing overheating a lot easier.

Some Computers use other methods that wouldn't be affected by dust like water to cool down the processor. Water and electricity are usually not good things to combine but in these specific uses with controlled flow it is an effective way to cool down super computers and gaming computers that use a lot more electricity and work faster than normal computers.

Most electronics follow this same idea, some however are not as powerful or do not move as much electricity so they do not get as hot, and do not need as much to cool them off.

Sometimes electronics can malfunction causing a massive overheating, this is uncommon but possible.
Again typically they have built into them ways that they automatically turn off and don't let you use it until it is  cooled down again.

What you can do about it..

If it's overheating, turn it off and let it chill out.
Make sure to ask permission before working on any electronics but making sure they are cleaned with compressed air or some vacuum cleaners that can also clean electronics, sometimes simply blowing the dust out with your own breath is helpful.
Turn on a fan, open a window, make sure nothing is covering the vents or fans of electronics and so they have room to get the heat out.
Limit the use of electronics in extremely hot conditions.

Take this quiz.

Tee Worlds Map Editor

Today we are going to explore video game creation using a map editor for the game Teeworlds.

Teeworlds is a free multiplayer online game I have put on our schools shared X drive for all to play.

The goal today is to learn how to use the map editor to understand how video games are created.

Step 1. Launch the game Teeworlds so that you know what the game is like, lets all join in on the map that Mr. Hurst created.
Launch the game here: My Computer > Lane on 'ppsfils.ad.ppsnet....' > Media > Games > Teeworlds
Mr. Hurst will give you a server IP address to connect to.

Step 2. Once we have an understanding of how the gameplay and maps relate lets create our own.

Disconnect and in the game menu press the key combination CTRL + SHIFT + E.

This loads the editor which looks like this.

Mr. Hurst will show you the basics of how to use this editor on the projector. The main thing to know is the game layer, and the skin layers. *skin in the sense means the visuals you see in the game.

You can either file > load an existing map and make significant changes (RECOMMENDED), or if you feel daring build your own level from scratch (HARD).

Step 3. Once you have finished with your level you need to save it as and call it your name. THEN locate the map file and upload it to me.  - Mr Hurst can put your map on the server and we can all play it, if you want.

Locate the file and copy it to your Y drive or Desktop (place easy to get to).
The original file will be here:

My computer > Local Disk (C) > Documents and Settings >  YOUR LOGIN > Application Data > Tee Worlds > Maps
*Application data is a hidden folder, once you get to the folder of your login, in the address bar type the folder \application data

Earth Day - Electricity Conservation

Why do we still have CRT (old and ugly) monitors?

290 Watts Average Usage for CRT and desktop
Cost in electricity per school year $42

235 Watts Average Usage for LCD and desktop
Cost in electricity per school year $34

Cost for a new LCD monitor $140

$8 Dollar difference would take 17 years in electric savings to make up the price for buying a new LCD monitor.

*PGE

Today's Assignment

Download this spreadsheet and change the hours column from 8 hours per day to 24 hours per day to see how much money it would cost to leave the computer on instead of turning it off.

Next change the 180 days which makes a school year to 365 days to see how much it would cost if you were to leave a computer on year around.

Flipbook - Spring Animation

Today we are going to learn some basics in animation,
how the frames lead one to another to create a motion.

Create a basic animation, have it about some type of spring or earth day theme, think green plants / trees / flowers growing, etc.

Make an animation that uses ALL 100 frames. NO LESS, USE ALL ONE HUNDRED.

http://www.benettonplay.com/toys/flipbookdeluxe/guest.php

As you save it will ask you for an email, you do not need to put in your real name or email you can put one I create for this assignment "ppslane@gmail.com".

Remember no VIOLENCE, no guns, etc..

Diagram Your Day

https://www.lucidchart.com/documents/demo - create a diagram or flowchart of your day, what you do, decisions you might have, detail it however you like.

Your day could mean a school day, then put details like which class goes first, next, etc.
-Dont' just say period 1, period2, period 3 etc. because those are not your actual details of your day, those are are placeholders, put the actual course name or teacher, how you actually associate as the thing you go to next, such as, Math > PE > Music > Mr. Anderson > Ms.  Nelson, etc...
Or your day could mean a weekend or holiday where you put things you expect or want to do with details and information.

BEFORE YOU CLOSE THE DIAGRAM, share the link with me by pasting it as a comment to this blog posting along with your name.
